People I Admire: Paul Newman

January 25, 2010

Paul Newman was a successful actor, director, racecar driver, and even a WWII veteran.  He has won an Oscar for Best Actor for his role in Martin Scorsese’s 1986 film The Color of Money which co-stared a young Tom Cruise.  My favorite film of his is Cool Hand Luke of 1967 but his acting career is not the main reason why I admire him.  He was an entrepreneur who usually got what he wanted.  He realized all this stuff he was obtaining, even his Oscar, was just stuff.  Shit.  Garbage. Shiny. Junk.  What he will be remembered for will be the lives he changed through his charitable efforts.

In 1982, He started Newman’s Own which sells a variety of food products including salad dressings, drinks, and pasta sauce among other things.  The catch is that he donates all the proceeds to charity.  As of 2008, over $280 million dollars has been given to charity.  He also started The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp in 1988 which an all expense paid camp for terminally ill children.  A place where kids can be kids and where fun is the cure.

Paul Newman passed away September 26, 2008.
